As a result of recent changes to admissions, the holistic admissions philosophy held by many elite U.S. universities is not simply judging students on qualitative achievements in addition to their quantitative ones. Today, admissions officers also look at what is called intellectual vitality, intellectual risk-taking, or intellectual authenticity. This quality is generally perceived as a student’s genuine commitment to their intellectual passions.
When looking at a student’s application, admissions officers are not only looking for what the student’s interests are, but also why. Whether “athletic,” “academic,” “personal,” or “extracurricular,” one of the best ways to show admissions officers your or your child’s passions and academic interests is through long-term research projects earlier in the high school career. Before applying to college, you can work with Trellis Academic on brainstorming, planning, conducting, and presenting your own research!

For U.S. universities, the grades and activities of an applicant are evaluated for the four years before they apply. That means that anything a student does from Grade 9-Grade 12 is reviewed by admissions officers. It’s simply not enough to begin building an application profile a year before the application deadline. Successful applications to top U.S. universities begin preparation early to demonstrate academic passion and ability over a four year period. For students not yet in their application year, Trellis Academic can provide ongoing guidance in course selection, extracurricular activities, and academic profile development.

For students requiring extra guidance in standardized test preparation or artistic portfolio development, we are able to provide recommendations for tutors or courses based on the student’s profile.
