Q: Why did you decide to study abroad? What factors were most important to you when deciding to study abroad (e.g., academics, culture, career opportunities, personal growth)?
A: Studying abroad has been my personal pursuit of achieving academic goals and potential. The most important factors to me personally are the courses and program set-up and network. Entrepreneurship is my career goal so I decided to apply to USC since it is one of the top ten entrepreneurship programs.
On top of that, California is one of the vibrant states nurturing many prosperous ventures and turning into Fortune 500s like Google and Facebook. So, the place and location is one of the factors in my decision making process. So USC is the sweet spot marrying all of threes- Program, Location and Network Opportunity. I am glad that I’ve made this decision of exposing myself to this amazing opportunity and experiences.
Q: Were there any professors, classes, or experiences that particularly shaped your studies or career interests?
A: Entrepreneurship program at USC's Marshall Business School is amazing in many ways, bridging the gaps between academics to the real practice of what is like to be an entrepreneur like raising funds with VCs (Venture Capital Funds) and meeting with investors and setting up the management team and Board of Directors. In particular, learning from Paul Orfaela who has sold his venture to FedEx and Founder’s Dilemma with Noam Wasserman was very captivating and resourceful, solving any confusion and worries I had about entrepreneurship. They have in-depth knowledge and experiences in real world ventures. Professor Noam has done vigorous research about entrepreneurs and compiled an amazing case study about when to found the company and how to set it right since the beginning. Having taken classes with both, it inspired me to become the confident founder I am today and to face challenges, becoming a teacher or adjunct professor teaching one course about entrepreneurship at RULE in Cambodia.
Q: How did studying in the U.S. change your perspective or way of thinking?
A: Studying in the U.S really opened up my mind to learning about the world and better representing Cambodia to the world by contributing our part in Academia, bringing our ideas to the world. It shows the world that we do exist and we mean something. Studying in the U.S enabled me to surround myself with smart and talented individuals from different backgrounds, countries, and cultures. One of the greatest gifts and experiences I gained is international network connections and diversity of communication. Literally I can travel and seek support wherever the Trojan (USC) Alumni Network is and they have been supportive of my family business, giving advice and bringing quality networks, aiding its success.
Q: How do you think studying abroad has shaped your personal or professional journey since graduation?
Studying abroad has equipped me with the resilience mindset, GRIT, and confidence that I bring to my family business and setting up my ventures with confidence. Studying abroad let me experience all the challenges and hurdles that I need to overcome to get that result and success that I have envisioned. It really builds my vision to become someone that could transform and innovate the Cambodia Luxury Jewelry industry up to international standards, fostering integrity and trade practices in Cambodia.
Q: What’s one memory from your time at university that still stands out to you?
A: One memory that really stands out is the experience of working with former Marine Captain and entrepreneurs from India and Arizona to compete in a Venture award. Luckily, we won the second runner-up with outstanding business pitch with Lloyd Greif with interesting and compelling business models focusing on feasibility and scalability. It taught me to work in a team with amazing individuals from the military, the auto industry, and manufacturing in India. I learned to work in a dynamic and challenging background where we need to pitch to successful ventures’ cofounders and VC partners.
