I Younan is currently a PhD student in the Department of Political Science at University of Toronto. Currently, he is working on his dissertation project examining the political economy of skill and training in the context of new emerging technologies in developing economies. His research seeks to answer a simple yet complicated and interrelated question as to what explain the emergence of a skill formation regime in developing countries, why do some countries develop more robust skill system than others, and how has this skills institution evolved?
Beyond this research, his research interests encompass a broader spectrum of social welfare system in developing countries in relation to poverty reduction policies and social protection for vulnerable populations. This research interest combined with his passion has allowed him to stay motivated to contribute to help improve the well-being of the people and help governments make better policies for their population.
As a Cambodian native, he has cultivated extensive academic experience and rigorous training in both the United States and Canada. In addition, his diverse educational and professional experiences from the international organizations such as the UNDP to local organization such as local food pantry have fostered and nurtured him into a scholar and practitioner who commits to make the world a better place for future generations by bridging research into impactful and practical realities.
Through his experiences and his upbringing, he brings new unique perspective and grounded experiences to help guide newer generations of Cambodians to gain access to further educational opportunities.
Trellis Academic's Research Fellowship program supports original, independent research focused on Cambodia and aims to connect that work to broader educational and development goals. Fellows will bring academic insight to bear on real-world questions, whether through historical analysis, policy research, or ethnographic fieldwork, all with the goal of contributing to Cambodia’s development and educational future.
